“And then there is the most dangerous risk of all — the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.” – Randy Komisar
DutyFreeList in conversation with adventurer junkie, traveller, influencer and Founder of Live The Adventure, Louis Cole.
What were the 3 most memorable experiences you had in the year 2018?
There were so many incredible experiences in 2018. It is hard to choose one!
- I really enjoyed digging up dinosaur bones in Alberta. It was such a new experience as I have never done anything like that before.
- Hosting the Live the Adventure creators trip in Cape Town last year was definitely a highlight. We invited a group of Instagram and YouTube travel creators and spent ten days doing lots of cool stuff. It was so much fun and a great way to connect and collaborate with people whose work I really admire.
- My most memorable experience of 2018 was definitely the bike ride from London to Morocco. It is one of the biggest challenges I have ever faced. It was physically exhausting but also one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. There is nothing like navigating the landscape by bike. The scenery is amazing and it’s a great way to meet people.
Do you have a bucket list for 2019? If so, what are the 5 things on it?
I have so much I want to do in 2019, but my priority is definitely getting our Beyond Borders documentary finished. Post-production has taken a bit longer than expected and we are working so hard to get this completed. Support for the documentary has been incredible and we cannot wait for everyone to finally be able to watch it!
I would really like to visit Colombia, Costa Rica and Central America alongside some impromptu road trips with my friends across the USA, especially Oregon, that would be fun.
This year I’m looking for an electric car as I want to travel with a smaller carbon footprint. It’s something I have wanted to do for a while now, and I think being able to travel without polluting the environment is really important.
What has been your favourite luxury travel destination?
The Maldives was absolutely incredible! The atolls and beaches are really beautiful and the hotel was one of the most luxurious I have ever stayed in; it was definitely a five-star experience.
We know you’re a travel expert, share 1 secret (exposé) you want to reveal to your fans who see your picture-perfect Instagram?
Well, it’s not really a secret but I never check-in bags when I travel, no matter the destination. I try to travel as light as possible, which can sometimes be difficult with my cameras and gear. But generally I only travel with one bag as hand luggage, it saves so much time especially as I am always on the go.
What’s a totally different experience you want to do in 2019? A suggestion for travel enthusiasts? Places, experiences?
My totally different experience for 2019 is to focus more on the community where I live in Los Angeles. I’m really happy where I am now and it’s great to have a base, especially after living a nomadic life for so many years. I’m really lucky as I am surrounded by my friends and such a great mix of people. I really connect with everyone here and want to contribute as much as I can to the community. The most important, especially as I feel so at home here.
I would also love to return to Pakistan, for a longer trip next time. It was such a brilliant experience and would love to spend more time discovering certain areas. It’s such an interesting country and the people are so friendly.
We have seen your FoodForLouis vlog, what are your views on food vlogging?
FoodForLouis is my YouTube channel which focuses on plant-based cooking. I have been vegan for a while now and I wanted to create a channel that brings playfulness into vegan cooking.
I think a lot of people have a misconception of vegan food as being really bland and boring, which isn’t true at all. With my food vlogs I cook in my kitchen at home and focus on meals that I love, but also popular meals that can be made vegan with little difference to quality or taste. Most of these dishes I have never cooked before so it can be quite entertaining!
My FoodForLouis channel is new territory for me, and really it’s just a fun and upbeat way to encourage people to cook plant-based, healthy meals as well as documenting my journey as an amateur cook. Hopefully, it demonstrates that vegan food can be delicious and that you don’t have to be an experienced chef to make it. My goal is to empower people so they just give it a go!
