Summy from Alpargatas, is a passionate woman who has made her mark in the travel retail industry. With years of experience and zeal to accomplish boundless opportunities with grace. She is an epitome of leadership and innovation for young women stepping into this industry.

Here is an exclusive interview with her on the advent of Women’s Day

Your current role and a short brief.

I am the Commercial Manager for Havaianas in Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and Travel Retail. I lead and expand this vibrant Brazilian lifestyle brand across 1000+ distribution points, optimizing our retail footprints across the region. Additionally, I am passionate in driving innovation to be commercially viable for consumers, retailers and distribution partners.

What sparks passion in you about travel retail, travel and tourism?

I am an avid traveler myself for both leisure and work, having been to over 23 different countries and 75 bustling cities. It has definitely opened my life and filled it with hilarious stories to tell. I find the cultural dynamics precede the reputation and expectation I have of that country every time I travel. I am passionate about the dynamism, cultural diversity and boundless opportunities this industry brings.

Who is your women role model?

Malala Yousafzai, Alison Watkins, Michelle Obama, Ellen Degeneres, Ali Wong, Amy Schumer, Sheryl Sandberg

Advice for young women in your and other industries?

Young women of tomorrow will no doubt precede their previous generations with greater knowledge and talent. To thrive in an era with refined education and advanced technology, my advice would be to use it wisely with the intention of greater good, to consciously contribute to the communities you live in and don’t forget to have fun with the people you meet along your journey.

Who would you thank as a mentor in your career?

Vicki Elliot is an incredible mentor with a powerful background in business. Vicki is someone that unfolds my true potential in the waiting and pushes me to succeed no matter what the outcome is. She never fails to open up my passion and confidence to fuel enthusiasm into my career trajectory. I am very grateful to have her as a mentor.

What was the last gift you bought at duty free and gave someone?

Alfajors from Buenos Aires Duty Free, those were gold!

Innovations that you are looking forward to in technology/ social media (foldable phones, VR, AI, BITCOIN ?)

Long waiting times and checkout lines are my biggest pet peeves, so I am looking forward for VR and AI to roll out into more retail stores!
